I consider myself a contemporary miniaturist. The miniature tradition, vibrant in
many cultures through the centuries, has been largely abandoned in the art world of the
21st century. The format provides a uniquely intimate experience for the viewer, forcing
them to pay attention to that which is usually overlooked.
This series had it’s beginnings a few years ago, during a bicycle
trip through Iceland with it’s the surreal and unpopulated landscape. Upon returning I started a series of semi-imaginary landscapes that later morphed to include other spaces as seen through the lens of the
poem – a familiar space rendered strange by vacancy – an empty bed, a vacant building,
a bar stripped of it’s inhabitants by morning, the crowded city emptied by a snowstorm.
The series is a personal attempt to understand time, and memory, and how the two work
together to affect our perception of physical space.
